The modern day practice of Trick or Treating, where young children dress up in spooky fancy dress costumes and visit neighbours in the local neighbourhood in the hope of getting sweet treats, actually has historical roots that reach back hundreds of years, at which time 'Trick or Treating' was more commonly known as 'guising' or 'mumming'. The principle was essentially the same: In order to placate evil spirits, the living would leave out small offerings of food and drink. Over time this tradition became exploited by enterprising people who began dressing like these mournful and mischievous creatures, performing antics in exchange for the edible donations.
